A Critique Of Religion

27th May 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Join us as we present a series of workshops on the topic: A Critique Of Religion.
The presenter, Martin from Cristicuffs, would like to introduce the discussion based on the following:

The critique of religion seems easy: believing in an invisible man in the sky seems silly and far removed from modern day rationality. Indeed, a lot of atheist criticism of religion takes this approach: arguments are developed to demonstrate god does not exist or to show it is for believers to prove there is a god rather than the other way around.

However, a religious mind is typically largely unaffected by such criticism. It bases itself not on reason but faith, and often fits, without too much friction, into this world. Religion is not exactly dying out.

In this meeting, we want to present and discuss how religious people think and what they mean when they say “god”. We intend to explain the fundamentally authoritarian and conservative – in the sense of making peace with the existing social conditions – nature of religious beliefs and how that squares off with people rebelling in the name of god.
Finally, we want to discuss if religious ideas are really in such stark contrast to the positions put forward by their critics.

The meeting will be structured as workshops. That is Martin will present for, say, 10-15 minutes, followed by a discussion of 10-20 minutes, then a bit more presentation, following by a bit more discussion etc. until the 2 hours are up. It is felt that this way, discussions are a lot more engaging because they are focused on the points just made, as opposed to trying to squeeze all discussions into a Q&A at the end.
