Betty Cipher’s School of the Future – next stage planning (with Autonomous Tech Fetish)

10th December 2016 @ 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Betty Cipher’s School of the Future is a new workshop programme being developed in the Common House. We aim to create a co-educational space where we can develop radical, practical, feminist, and fun counter practices to respond to fast developing fields of technological change. We want to explore and respond to the ways in which software, hardware, and social, biological, and chemical technologies introduce new forms of power into our bodies, social relations, city architectures, and labour conditions.

We recognise the many barriers that prevent people from discussing and engaging with changing technology, and are working actively to create approaches that are accessible for people of different ages, genders, classes, race and educational level. We seek to value all kinds of knowledge, including not-knowing, and all skills and experiences, including the experience of doing something for the first time.

Over the last three years, ATF’s activities included workshops, skillshares, and art projects on databases, data security, trash databases, libre graphics, data drinking tea gloves, mapping games, and DIY biometrics. Were moving into a new phase, mixing our experiences with fresh ideas to make a co-education programme for the future.

This is our second development meeting. We’ll map the problems we face as we try to find creative and critical responses to our current technical and political situation, and use this map to imagine to generate an ethos and curriculum for our school. Please join us!

Kids are welcome at all our events! We try to make everything we do accessible to all ages and abilities as far as we can, and are happy to provide alternative things to do if that makes more sense. Common House has ramp access via a secondary entrance, but there are other accessibility issues with narrow doors and no wheelchair accessible toilet. We are working together with the rest of Common House to resolve these issues. If you’d like to attend, but aren’t able to due to e.g. childcare or transport costs, please get in touch as  we might be able to help. You can email us at bettycipher@yandex.com.

About us
Autonomous Tech Fetish probes how digital technology is fetishised and how it can be re-configured to different needs and desires. We work with activist groups to affirm their technological autonomy and are committed to co-education exploring the pitfalls and potentials of technologies without assumptions.
