Abortion Stories: Zine-making workshop on experiences of abortion

‘Abortion Stories’ is a community building workshop run by Daphne Politi & Illary Valenzuela Oblitas, inviting people who have experienced abortion to share their experiences in an intimate small group. The workshop will use drawing, painting, collaging or writing in order for the participants to express their experiences in a visual way. It will seek to open up a discussion about potential feelings of loneliness and shame experienced during & after the abortion, while also forging networks of solidarity and sharing examples of empowerment & control over our bodies and choice. Through engaging in the creative exercises of drawing, painting, collaging or writing we want to create a collaborative visual archive of the participants’ stories in the form of a DIY fanzine. The fanzines will then be hand-bound and kept by each participant.

This workshop aims to:

Facilitate a supportive, non-judgemental and confidential space for the participants to reflect on personal and group themes.

Show that every person experiences the emotions of abortion in their own way.

Facilitate community building within a safe space, not a professional support group.

Build networks of solidarity and support between the participants and beyond.

The workshop is presented as part of the Festival of Choice 2018, bringing together feminist & human rights organisations, collectives and independent organisers in support of the Global Day of Action for Access to Safe and Legal Abortion. This year’s festival will include panel discussions, screenings, workshops & many more, reclaiming our bodily autonomy and right to reproductive justice.

Workshop format:

Check ins/ Ice-breaker exercise

Start experimenting with drawing/ writing/ collaging

We would like to kindly ask that you only attend this workshop if you have experienced an abortion yourself. This is the case for the facilitators as well.
