Peace in Myself, Peace in the World

29th April 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Are you working compassionately in the world, offering your time and energy to others?

Are you a front line worker or an activist advocating for social and ecological change?

Or do you simply feel overwhelmed by your daily contributions to the turbulent world around you?

Sometimes our passion for securing a more harmonious world can leave us feeling depleted and a little unsteady. At worst it can lead to burn out, dis-ease and distress.

This immersive workshop is designed to gently help us come home to ourselves in the present moment and take care of what we find there.

Inspired by the teachings of peace activist and zen master Thich Naht Hanh and delivered from the heart of facilitator Rachel Butt who found sanctuary in the practice of mindfulness meditation, Hatha Yoga and deep relaxation following 10 years of front line advocacy.

Together we will explore these practices, turning our attention inwards by inviting our minds to observe the breath, flow through gentle movement, holding postures to build stability and release any tension held in the body. You will be invited to observe thoughts without judgement creating a sense of ease in the mind and body and we will finish with a deep relaxation to leave us fully at ease, rebalanced and renewed.

By practicing together we can support each other to plant seeds of peace and set our intention to come from a place of peace in all our contributions, for the greater benefit of ourselves and the world.

Facilitator Bio

Rachel Butt is a mindfulness practitioner, Hatha yoga student & teacher (RYT 200hrs) and musician with 10 years experience working towards social justice in the voluntary & legal sector.

Rachel has a passion for capacity building, connecting ideas & people to make tools for change accessible to all.

After receiving the national ‘Outstanding Advocacy’ award in 2016 following success in changing local policy and practice through the effective use of law and Human Rights and sharing this approach nationwide, Rachel felt the call to leave front line work, recognising it was time to rebalance and heal.

Despite the work being effective her newly established mindfulness practice highlighted it had come at a significant cost to herself and the world as it was motivated by anger and despair at the flailing system.

Finding sanctuary in the practice alongside a growing commitment to yoga to take care of these energies Rachel left the UK with her guitar, 1st travelling to India to train intensively in traditional Hatha Yoga followed by a year spent in extended periods of practice with the mindful community of Plum Village in France, Thailand and Hong Kong.

Through consistent daily practice of both traditions and support in community Rachel found balance and began teaching in South East Asia. Here she developed her gentle, attentive and playful style, bringing mindfulness to the mat and awareness, calm, stability and strength to the body and mind.

‘Peace in myself, Peace in the world’

Inspired by the practice of engaged buddhism found at Plum Village and modelled by Thich Naht Hanh and Sr Chan Kong during the Vietnamese war, Rachel returns to the UK to combine her passions, learning and experience in a series of workshops, offering seeds of peace & practice to compassionate workers, agents of social change and anyone wishing to cultivate peace for themselves and the world.
