Radical Education Forum

26th March 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Mental Health, Education and political action
A conversation on children and young people’s mental health, economic and educational policies, and political action with Psychologists for Social Change campaign group

Please join us for a discussion about the ways in which psychological distress and mental health are deeply political and politicised, and how this relates to the school context and to the lives of children, young people and families. What are the implications of this for our work in schools and mental health services, and what can we do about it? We will situate this discussion in relation to current government ideology and economic policies in the form of austerity politics, educational policy, neoliberalism and mental health, with examples from the campaign activities of Psychologists for Social Change (PSC) (also known as Psychologists Against Austerity).

How might we as educators and mental health campaigners work together to take collectively action to resist oppressive policies and government infringement into education practice, mental health services and social welfare?

This discussion also follows from last month’s Radical Education Forum session about the impact of ‘high stakes’ testing regimes and ‘exam factories’, and a beginning conversation within that session about how group members might want to and take action in response to government policies.

Radical Education Forum meets at the Common House, 5e Pundersons Gardens, Bethnal Green, E2 9QG, on the last Monday of each month.

All are welcome to join – Our mailing list: https://lists.riseup.net/www/subscribe/radicaleducationforum
The *Radical Education Forum* is a group of people working in a wide range of educational settings who meet monthly to discuss radical pedagogical theories and techniques, and contemporary issues of interest to those involved in education. We are interested in how these theories and questions can inform our practice. The Forum supports social justice in education, linking practitioners within mainstream educational institutions, community education initiatives, social movements, arts organisations and self-organised groups.
Meetings are held on the last Monday of every month at the Common House from 7-9pm and are open to all. The Common House, Unit 5E Pundersons Gardens, Bethnal Green, London E2 9QG, http://commonhouse.org.uk/
We launched the Radical Education Workbook Saturday, October 27, 2012 at the London Anarchist Bookfair at Queen Mary University – and have kept going – for almost 10 years now!!
