Restorative Yoga

17th September 2013 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

What is Restorative Yoga?
Restorative Yoga is a therapeutic class, for people with physical or mental health needs. This is a much more gentle class, focusing on breath and gentle movements. The benefits of yoga are many and varied. Josetta will tell you what the particular benefits of each pose is as we go along. Yoga increases flexibility and tone. We always focus on breathing throughout, which provides the meditative and calming elements. Yoga boosts the immune system, is calming for the nervous system and improves the digestion, circulation and overall health.

All students complete a confidential health form and anyone with health problems must check with their GP before beginning any new form of exercise. Restorative yoga therapy can work on any issue.

Yoga teacher : Josetta Malcolm
I specialise in Ashtanga Yoga and Restorative Yoga. I gained my teaching qualification and am insured through the British Wheel of Yoga. I have been practicing for twelve years and teaching for five.

Classes are open to all and aim to be a safer space for lesbian, gay, bisexual, Trans*, Intersex, Queer & questioning people, People of Colour, sex workers and all body types.

Cost:
£3 – unwaged and low income / £5 – waged / £7 – high income

People of any age, size and ability can do Restorative yoga. Josetta specialises in teaching beginners so is used to working with people who are wary or completely new to yoga. It does not matter how bendy anyone is and everyone will benefit from my classes. Josetta can modify all the postures to suit individual needs and will be very gentle and teach the basics with a strong focus on safety.

What you need to bring
Your own mat. Mats are really cheap (from £6.99), but it is better if you can buy a slightly more expensive but ethical/ecological mat. Let Josetta know if you need to borrow a mat.

What should you wear
Students need to wear loose/comfortable clothes that they can stretch in, so most loose sports/jogging type clothes are good.

What else do you need to know
Please don’t eat a heavy meal for at least 4 hours or a light meal for at least 2 hours before class. It is not good to drink a lot just before class or to drink during a class. This is because it can be quite uncomfortable to do intense exercise after consuming food or drink (in the same way it does if you eat before going swimming). Exceptions to this are if you have a medical condition.

For Women Who Menstruate
Women who are on their period should not practice Ashtanga because of the postures and the way we engage our abdominal muscles. On lighter days, Josetta can give alternative postures. Restorative yoga can be practiced any day of the month. Please always let the teacher know if you are menstruating so they can give you the beneficial postures for this time.
