The Left Book Club

25th July 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Why Class Matters

What does class mean, and how does it help us understand politics? Is ‘class’ a descriptive category, or a dynamic and exploitative process? Do class centred strategies sideline struggles against racial and gender based oppression?

Join the LBC and Charles Umney to discuss why social class remains a fundamental presence in the 21st century, and the implications that a socialist conception of class has for our politics.

Charles Umney is a Lecturer at the University of Leeds. He teaches, researches and writes on the subjects of trade unionism, working conditions and employment policy across Europe, and has also published extensively on the topic of working life in live music. He is the author of Class Matters (Pluto, 2018).

The Left Book Club is a subscription book club for everyone interested in left politics. Relaunched along the lines of Victor Gollancz’s ground-breaking organisation active in the 1930s, the LBC seeks to popularise ideas from the left across the UK and abroad. We are working with a wide range of publishers to ensure that the books we offer truly reflect the best works in left thinking today. Please email office@leftbookclub.com if you have any questions!
