Radical Education Forum

30th October 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

School Readiness vs Child Readiness
School readiness for children starting school aged 4 has risen up the policy agenda in recent years and is transforming early education practices, particularly for children in disadvantaged areas. As the strain for better exam results higher up the school system spreads downwards, early years educators (and parents) come under increasing pressure to ‘school’ their children.

What does it mean to be ‘school ready’? Who is targeted as potentially ‘unready’? What does this say about institutionalisation of children and adults throughout the education system? How can we transform schools into being ‘child-ready’ instead?

As a starting point we will be reading this article by Peter Moss but don’t worry if you don’t have time to read it all!

The *Radical Education Forum* is a group of people working in a wide range of educational settings who meet monthly to discuss radical pedagogical theories and techniques, and contemporary issues of interest to those involved in education. We are interested in how these theories and questions can inform our practice. The Forum supports social justice in education, linking practitioners within mainstream educational institutions, community education initiatives, social movements, arts organisations and self-organised groups.

Meetings are held on the last Monday of every month at the Common House from 7-9pm and are open to all.  For details of upcoming meetings check http://radicaleducationforum.tumblr.com/
