Friends of The Joiners Public Meeting: Join The Fight Against Mass Gentrification!
London is experiencing rapid and ruthless gentrification that is making people homeless, is ripping the heart out of our diverse city and is threatening safe spaces for vulnerable, disadvantaged groups. Whilst we understand that preventing the demolition of social housing is absolutely crucial, we see the destruction of important cultural and community spaces as part of the same, ugly beast – mass gentrification.

Our campaign and this event aims to bring together other groups and campaigns that are resisting the mass gentrification of London, to share experiences, tactics of resistance and how we can better support each other.

Friends of the Joiners Arms (FOTJA) is campaigning and developing networks to save and evolve The Joiners Arms as a welcoming and long-term space for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex and Asexual (LGBTQIA) community and its allies.

FOTJA was established by the local community in November 2014 to challenge the closure of the Joiners Arms, a valued venue for the LGBTQIA community for almost twenty years. In the first few months of its campaign, FOTJA successfully secured Asset of Community Value status, formed key partnerships with local community groups and established a strong supporter base – with a thriving weekly stall, social media presence, an online petition with over 1,000 responses, a community consultation which has over 200 responses to date and an open letter attracting support from key organisations and individuals. We aim to continue growing this campaign to help protect the Joiners Arms – which now lays empty – and evolve it into a LGBTQIA Community Centre and Pub.

FOTJA believes the LGBTQIA individuals deserve committed support to enable their full integration and empowerment in their communities and wider society. Through campaigning and advocacy, we can have a transformative effect on:
