HackLab Workshop on SMS Networks for Activist Groups

Dear Common House People,

The group involved in setting up the HackLab at Common House propose to have an SMS-network (Short Message Service) for Activist Groups Workshop on November 23, 2013 at 1500-1800 at the Common House, to be led by Alexandra Joensson and Cliff Hammet. Alexandra and Cliff set up the first network for X-Talk some time back. We are now in a process of consulting with Activist Groups who would like to set up that network—so far Anti-Raids Network, and Eviction Resistance Network have expressed interest in being a part of the workshop. The aims of the workshop are to work with Aleaxandra and Cliff to learn
about the SMS network system and discuss the needs of activist groups
who are interested in the system.

More info: SMS network has been used to send important messages to all members in the network for the cost on one SMS; basically, you key in @’name_of_network’ and the message goes out to all members. It can run on any computer, it will reroute messages to the network; the computer acts as a server; the program can run on any OS; it deletes the message as it goes out for security purposes. Current topics of development for the architecture of the service is how to make it more secure, restricting access for parts of it.
